Buying your first SUV: seven checks before you sign
Boot space with the third row up, real ground clearance, service cost per year and four other things showrooms rarely volunteer.

1. Measure the boot with all seats up. Many seven-seaters leave under 250 litres, which is one cabin bag.

2. Ask for the five-year service schedule in writing. Total cost varies by more than ₹60,000 between rivals.

3. Check laden ground clearance, not the brochure figure, which is usually unladen.

4. Sit in the middle rear seat for ten minutes before deciding a car seats five.

5. Test the ADAS on a real road. Some systems brake sharply for overtaking two-wheelers.

6. Confirm the airbag count on the variant you are buying, not the top trim.

7. Get the on-road price broken down into ex-showroom, insurance, registration and accessories.
